Here's a list of the Finalists vying for the 2014 Green Car of the Year award. The winner will be announced in November.

• Audi A6 TDI. The 2014 A6 TDI model has a 240-horsepower, 3-liter, 6-cylinder clean diesel engine and all-wheel drive that is good for zero to 60 miles per hour in just 5.5 seconds. The car also has a start-stop system, which shuts off the engine at intersections. It gets an EPA estimated 38 highway miles per gallon, and has more than 700 miles of highway driving range.

• BMW 328d. BMW's first four-cylinder diesel engine in the U.S. is rated at 45 mpg on the highway. It's a 180-horsepower, 2-liter available with rear- or all-wheel drive.

• Honda Accord. The midsize Accord now comes in four-cylinder, V-6, hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions. Even the V-6 engine gets 36 mpg on the highway. At the high end, the plug-in gets an EPA rating of 115 MPGe, the government's way of rating electric vehicles equivalent to gasoline miles per gallon.

• Mazda3. With the full suite of the brand's Skyactiv engine, transmission, chassis and weight-saving technologies, the redesigned 2014 Mazda3 — with its new 2.0-liter, 155 hp., four-cylinder engine — achieves a 41-mpg highway rating.

• Toyota Corolla. The redesigned-for-2014 compact sedan's line has increased efficiency and includes a new Eco model that is rated 42 mpg on the highway with its conventional 140-horsepower 1.8-liter, four-cylinder engine. The Eco's engine uses Toyota's new Valvematic technology, which both increases the mileage and adds 8 horsepower over the engine used in the other models.
