The new Honda Accord Hybrid means more jobs in Ohio.
Honda of America Manufacturing Inc. on Thursday outlined plans to build the hybrid version of its 2013 flagship sedan at its Marysville assembly plant. The company is spending $23 million on a 95,000-square-foot expansion of the facility and expects to add 50 jobs.

I speculated back in November that the Accord Hybrid likely would be built in Marysville based on the company’s production philosophy. This will be the first hybrid model produced by Honda in Ohio and only the third made in North America for the Honda and luxury Acura lines. The company began making Civic Hybrid and the Acura ILX Hybrid in Greensburg, Ind., last year.
The return of the traditional gas-and-electric hybrid car, expected to be rated at 47 miles a gallon, to the Accord lineup was revealed last year. It is scheduled to go on sale this year. Honda Motor Co. (NYSE:HMC) also is selling a Japan-made Accord plug-in hybrid car in New York and California rated at 115 miles a gallon.
The Marysville expansion includes lengthening the assembly line so hybrid production processes can be added, as well as creating space for parts receiving and sub-assembly operations.
The new work to accommodate the hybrid manufacturing is just the latest capital investment by Honda in Ohio. The company has announced more than $800 million in facilities projects in the state in the past three years, including multiple projects at the Anna engine plant as well as work at the Russells Point transmission facility.
