When the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In release date rolls around next year, it won’t be available to many. However, those lucky (or dedicated) enough to score one of the models launched in New York and California will experience performance the likes of which the world expects of a truly next-generation 21st Century hybrid.
Honda has officially made the announcement that the 2014 Accord Plug-In will be offered for just shy of $38,000, which puts it right in the stomping ground of both the Toyota Prius plug-in and the mighty Chevy Volt. Nevertheless, by contrast and in its own right the 2014 Accord Plug-In represents a significant progression not only for Honda, but also for the hybrid market as a whole.
The new Plug-In Accord will ship with the same array of gadgets and gizmos as the top-end 2012 Accord Touring, which includes a stunning and comprehensive lineup of safety and comfort features. Inside, the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In looks, feels and acts like a high-end, luxurious vehicle with its plug-in hybrid status coming as something of a bonus – rather than the other way around.
True, it isn’t what you’d call a heartbreaker on the outside in terms of aesthetics, but it at least isn’t quite as hideous in parts as some of the car’s critics have suggested. It appears as though Honda went to town adding a few too many tweaks and alterations to make the 2014 Accord Plug-In different to the standard model – restraint would have been a good thing.
Either way, few go out and pick up a plug-in hybrid for Aston Martin looks – what they’re more interested in is of course fuel-economy. According to Honda, the 2014 Accord Plug-In has an ell-electric range of around 13 miles and delivers a superb estimated 115 miles per gallon. Honda’s first foray into a dual-motor system has well and truly hit the nail on the head, with plenty of grunt when needed, refined city driving and seamless transition between electric and gas engines.
If they can just manage to bring the costs down a little, Honda should really thing about using the twin-motor technology in more of their upcoming vehicles.
All in all therefore, the 2014 Honda Accord Plug-In isn’t likely to steal the show in terms of its exterior looks or price, but when it comes to features, comfort, performance and fuel-efficiency, anyone on the lookout for a hybrid in New York or California really should check it out.
